Rebecca: Chapters 1-5

Chapter One

I really loved the personification of the gardens of Manderley to almost become a sinister character.

I also really like the begin at the end opening.

Chapter Two

"We all of us have our particular devil who rides us and torments us, we must all give battle in the end."

Chapter Three

Introduction of Mrs Van Hopper and Mr de Winter: I think Mrs Van Hopper is a brilliantly written character, I can really see her in my mind. (She kind of remind me of Rita Skeeter haha)

Chapter Four

The contrast of this description of the gardens and the description from the beginning was amazing, I loved the contrast that mirrored the story.

"She drowned you know, in the bay near Manderley..."

I also found the comments on society in this chapter interesting. Especially the way she heroine is treated when she is with de Winter to when she isn't.

Chapter Five

"Already she belong to the past, she was a memory."
I thought that was a beautiful line. The whole memory scene was lovely.

I love it when de Winter kissed her on the hand.

"And I had to call him Maxim."

Come and Discuss!!

I have picked out a few points/quotes that I found interesting please come and expand on what I have noticed and add your own view point.

Well, if this isn't meant to be, then I don't know what is! LOL.

I just stumbled upon this community tonight, and I finished reading Rebecca only yesterday. Of course, I won't give anything away, but I loved it!

I adored chapter 5. I love how she kept repeating the line about calling him Maxim. The first few times, she says it in such ecstasy. And then it's in disappointment and a feeling of inferiority.

Mrs. Van Hopper really was a well written character. I'm glad you're enjoying the book, and I look forward to discussing it more.
